A lot has been in the works recently on the upcoming Omega 3.x version. As always, Omega is always on the lookout for the best methods, the most powerful features, all combined with a flexible base theme.
A recent post in the Omega Framework Group outlines the 3.x Roadmap, and prior to that, the concepts of introducing a responsive layout system into Omega were discussed as well.
The following video outlines the concepts in 3.x that will make all this possible along with a live demonstration of the layout responding via CSS3 @media queries and a completely rewritten backend, packed full of amazing new features.
The Omega 3.x version should be available on drupal.org over the next week after some finishing touches are added to the current codebase.
Many thanks for much of this great work on Omega 3.x goes to Sebastian Siemssen (http://drupal.org/user/761344) on helping rewrite the majority of the Omega core.
Please stay tuned for new updates, screencasts, and Omega documentation targeting the revolutionary 3.x branch of Omega!

Officially changed
Today is the day that I am officially changing from fusion to omega for my base theme (for very project). I have been a long time user of fusion and have watched omega from afar only because I got comfortable using fusion. However, omega has been much more proactive in its development and with the introduction of responsive theming (the future of theming), I am now hooked. Looking forward to a 3.x release. Keep up the good work himerus!!1
Thanks Nigel!
I always love comments like this, and I do get them quite a bit over the past yeah. I'm glad Omega suits you, and I hope the continued enhancements and new features, and better performance will continue to do so!
Everyone deserves a theme that is "their own"... and Omega has always been that... it belongs to the community, and when features are asked for, they should be implemented if at all possible.
Great work
As usual!
Huuuuu...
... I'm such eager to start over with omega. I saw all your vids about it and many more, and I'm excited.
Great work Jake
Omega 3.x Roadmap
Thanks for the nice screencast, Jake!
The 3.x dev version is now available on drupal.org. Please feel free to test it and give us as much feedback as possible. Since we are still working on the Omega/Alpha Core we are open for ideas and feature requests. Now is the perfect time for getting involved!
Please also take your time to test the new zone, region & section features and join us in #drupal-omega or http://groups.drupal.org/omega-framework to discuss your ideas and feature requests!
Thanks!
I have been reading up on mobile first and responsive layout all weekend. This is the cherry on top!
Thanks for making our work so much easier.
Responsive Layouts...
Argus,
There is quite a thread going on at http://drupal.org/node/1133502 about the responsive layout enhancements you might find interesting.
I really do think the approach we are taking to this can help shape a model for other themes/base themes and hopefully even Drupal core to follow on a path towards a more mobile/device friendly system.
great
Great screencast (and of course, great base theme). Thanks.
NICE
Beautiful piece of work here
The 3.x branch of Delta is
The 3.x branch of Delta is now available as Dev version! I just finished the code and didn't do too much testing but it should work! The best part is: It will work with EVERY theme out there. We no longer need to implement it on the theme layer, it just injects the Delta template settings into the normal theme settings!

Omega is essential
Jeez Jake, don't you ever sleep? Omega 3 is outstanding, I'm starting this week with the dev version on all of my new sites and I am thoroughly impressed with the quality and thoughtfulness that went in to this framework. Omega has become as essential to my Drupal site building workflow as Views. This is the bleeding edge of theming and I just can't say enough good things about how it has helped me as a developer. Now, with v3 I can offer "mobile" to my clients by default with very little extra effort, one theme/framework to rule them all! Thanks to himerus and fubhy for your hard work!

IE compatibility?
Looking at my google analytics I found out that almost 70% od the users visiting the sites I create use Internet Exprorer. As far as I know IE versions earlier than IE8 are NOT media queries compatible. So... will the vast majority of the audience see the mobile version of the site?
Couldn't a bit of js be used as an IE fallback? I recently switced to omega and I'm really AMAZED by all the work you've done, you've actually saved me way too many hours of work and really opened new horizons for Drupal! I simply LOVE IT!!!
However I feel that I won't really be able to use the 3.x. version of Omega until it's not only compatible with all devices but also browsers.I found this article and was wondering if this could be put to good use.

Looking for best solution...
I'm investigating the "best" options for replicating the functionality in IE (pre IE9)...
There are a LOT of options out there, including adapt.js, and a few other JS alternatives. I do not want to rely on these for the core functionality in Omega, but hopefully one of the options out there will prove to work well as a polyfill for IE6 > IE8.
It is in the works, and something will be working in the package for Alpha/Omega subthemes prior to a beta release.
Jake and me were talking
Jake and me were talking about this the other day. We will make this all completly IE compatible (at least back to IE6). Note that this is still an alpha... We will soon add this feature!
... However... Until this is
... However... Until this is "fixed" you can still use Omega 3.x in the "Non-responsive" mode (which doesn't use any media queries)!
hooked...
I 'm afraid I'm hooked to this theme.... :P I LOVE IT!!!
All I wanted to know is if it 's going to support IE in the future or not. And yes, I was relieved with your answer.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
WOW! Just WOW! This has got
WOW! Just WOW! This has got to be the coolest thing I have seen so far for Drupal!
Will this be available for Drupal 6, or is it just for Drupal 7?
Thank you Jake, Sebastian & everyone involved in this awesome project. Keep up the great, awesome work that you do!
The D6 version...
The D6 version is definitely not as feature rich as this new 3.x version for D7.
It is unlikely, but not impossible, that some of these features will be ported back to D6 in a new feature release. That however, highly depends on either a paid client willing to foot the hours needed, or a Drupal community member with the proper skills to backport and contribute.
I currently AM on a D6 Omega project, despite my long running history already with D7. But my primary focus is D7 and the future with Omega, so the D6 version "for now" is just kind of what it is...
IE?
Has the IE issue been resolved?
I don't have a windows machine in my possession, just linux and osx so I couldn't test this with the latest dev.
Yes, IE is situated...
The IE issue is resolved.
For IE <= 8, the default grid is displayed.
Mobile version (default) works on Windows phone 7 browser (tested w/emulator)
IE 9 displays media queries as expected.
Tell me more
First, let me say you are obviously developing the best Drupal theme out there. It makes so much sense to have a responsive, mobile-first layout.
I'm just getting acquainted with using the latest Omega 3x version downloaded from the Drupal project page.
It sounds like you have fixed the IE issue, with IE8 and older using the default grid. That's fantastic. Does this also fix any issues for other older browser versions?
Totally awesome work!
Great work!
Great work!
Waiting for documentation for omega 3.x...
are 3 resolution breakpoints enough?
i found the following recommendations in the book "repsonsive webdesign"(http://www.abookapart.com/products/responsive-web-design):

i fear to realize a site with mediaqueries like this is not possible with omega. please correct me if im wrong :)
That is totally possible! You
That is totally possible! You just have to create your own custom grid and layouts and add the desired media queries to it ... done!
Responsive settings: Fluid layout
There's a check box for selecting to enable fluid layout in 3x. Previously I thought you had mentioned a fluid layout was not yet possible with the responsive grid. Is this a recent change?
Is there any documentation about using a fluid layouts with the responsive grid in 3x yet?
Thanks again for your energy. You are really moving things along at a fast pace :)
How to upgrade
Nice work! However i have tried to upgrade from version omega 7.x-2.1 to version 7.x-3.0 but have not been able to do so. I have a multisite install and when i upgrade to the new version in sites/all every website inte multisite crashes?
Any tutorials on upgrading? Thanks for helping out :)
Hi, thanks for all of your
Hi, thanks for all of your work on this! I stumbled onto Omega yesterday and started poking around. It didn't take long to realize that this is the way to go for the project I'm working on. It makes so much sense.
However there are a few things I'm wondering about that I'm going to start experimenting with shortly. One is dealing with big images. My current site has a block of full-width (940px) wide feature images that fade in and out. I assume the best way to deal with this to use a percentage to set the width of the image.
The other is how to deal with things like drop down menus in the various views.
I'm new to this method of designing sites so I'm just sort of talking out loud. Anyway, thanks for your work on this, I'm excited to dig in!
Love it, run several sites with this theme!
Love this theme!
I set up one site after another, all with the Omega theme.
Latest install with Drupal 7.8 are flawless.
One bug I have in my latest site is that with debugging off, an empty zone does not show: i.e if userregion1 has no blocks, userregion2 shift to the left.
So i assign userregion1 to nothing and set userregion2 a prepend. That works.
Maybe it's in my custom css code.
Only a problematic thing is: the Google Analytics code does show up in firefox, but not in IE...
Responsive Slideshow.
Himerus and Co. ,
Congrats on the engagement! Great talk at DCon London too.
I've been doing my homework and came across a post in here that referenced this.
http://www.abookapart.com/products/responsive-web-design
There seem like a lot of different methods of getting a Gallery that responds to screen size. There are some issues I have come across, e.g. images scaling and the Image equivalent of FLOUT.
What seems like the way to go here? I played with getting this http://flex.madebymufffin.com/ to work with Views Slideshow. Its very lightweight and got the thing working. But what do you suggest? I know you've discussed "stepping up sizes" and caching/serving the small images first, but on a production site, is there an approach that you would think is bulletproof
Does any particular approach get the Himerus Seal of Approval. Also on the Omega IRC channel there is a fair amount of interest on this.
Can you let me know what you recommend and how to wield it within Omega?
Optional Styles
Thank you so much for your great work!
I have a bit of trouble getting started with Omega 3.x, and hope you will answer a fairly simple question:
When looking into my setting for my Omega 3.x subtheme, under the Responsive Grid Settings, underneath the different grid types (narrow, normal, wide) you have a very useful button called "Optional Styles". For some reason I am missing this button.
Do you have any idea how to get the optional styles showing?
I am running the newest version of Drupal and every module/theme installed.
Thank you so much in advance!
Thanks for the post, as usual
Thanks for the post, as usual your insights are right on topic. From today onwards will switch to Omega3.X
Let us start by looking at
Let us start by looking at the syntax and semantics of the selectors from 960.gs that we are going to use. It is important to do this since the selectors we are going to create will use the same expression and terminology. If you are already familiar with how 960.gs works, you can skip to the next section.
Thanks for sharing this, i
Thanks for sharing this, i was looking for it and finally i found it, Omega is great!
